What is your favourite thing about fungi, or working with fungi?

I’m continually astounded at the vast potential of fungi in applications as diverse as textiles (leather), packaging, nutraceuticals, a super-food, and psychiatry/well-being. Fungi offer amazing and important opportunities for humanity to live sustainably and healthily on Mother Earth.

Why does this industry matter to you?

Fungi and mycelium is the ultimate sustainable material. Natural, fast-growing, biodegradable… a wonder material. It’s a privilege to be working with such incredible organisms. For textiles and fashion, mycelium is a smart platform to make beautiful and functional products from nature, in a sector that drastically needs to improve its footprint.

What should people know about Sapro-Tech that they may not already know?

It’s all in how we grow mycelium – we’re developing a unique process that is very scalable, very tuneable and very promising indeed! It’s hard to tell mycelium how to grow, but the Sapro-Tech team are becoming experts in doing so… creating a pilot process that would scale in a sustainable, energy efficient way.
